
Management TeamWilliam Hanley President, Chief Executive Officer and Director Mr. Hanley has been a director of the company since 2005 and its President and CEO since January 2010.
Since July 2007, he has been Chairman, CEO and President of Optical Alchemy, Inc. Prior positions include that of Chairman of Video Communications, Inc.; Chairman, President and CEO of Millitech, Inc.; Executive Vice-President of the Hanson Group, Ltd.; and President and CEO of Galileo Corporation. At Millitech, Mr. Hanley grew revenue organically from $4 million to $25 million before selling the company in 2005 to a $5 billion firm.
Mr. Hanley has been a CEO of both publicly traded and privately held small companies for over 25 years and has led four successful business exits in the last ten years.
He has made appearances on CNN Business Day, MacNeil/Lehrer Business Hour and other national television and media programs.
Betsy Thomas Chief Operating and Financial Officer Betsy Thomas, has over 20 years of accounting experience and systems management and over 22 years experience in manufacturing and business. She received her Master’s Degree in accounting from Clemson University. She has worked for global manufacturing, marketing and distribution companies; such as Slim Fast/Unilever and Ryobi. She has been with Atlas Spine since 2006.
Matthew Baynham Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer and Director Mr. Baynham is the Chief Technology Officer and a co-founder of Atlas Spine. He began his career with Acromed, at that time the second largest spine company in the world. Thereafter, he was with DePuy Spine where he received an intensive and highly technical education in spinal surgery and biomechanics. At DePuy Spine he received extensive exposure to spinal surgery under the tutelage of Harry Schufelbarger.
Since the early 1990’s, Mr. Baynham has attended over 4,000 surgeries. As a result, he has developed a keen understanding of the challenges and shortcomings of several generations of implants and instrumentation. He founded BayMed Corporation to capitalize on this experience. The company designed custom instrumentation for surgeons, distributors and hospitals. He licensed many of these designs to Spine Tech (Zimmer Spine), Blackstone Medical, and DePuy Acromed. To date, Mr. Baynham has 7 issued patents, 30 patents pending, and +60 additional product concepts in varying stages of development. In 2005, Mr. Baynham, along with Drs Clay Baynham, Bret Baynham and David Campbell, founded Atlas Spine. The Company fills a significant void in the spinal implant market, focusing on design that is responsive to the needs of the spine surgeon.
Ms. May is Vice President of Engineering and Quality Assurance. She has 15 years experience as a biomedical engineer in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. Previously, she was Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Biomet 3i, and an Industrial Engineer with Elan Pharmaceuticals. Ms. May was the first recipient of the Delta Quality Award, the highest honor bestowed on an employee of Biomet-3i. She has an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University and a graduate degree in Entrepreneurship from the University of Florida, where she received the Thomas S. Johnson Entrepreneurial Scholar Award and was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She has been with Atlas Spine since 2006
Director of Business Development Mr. Jones has over 20 years experience in medical device sales and marketing. Prior to Atlas Spine, Mr. Jones was Vice President of Marketing for BioLok Inc., a publicly held manufacturer of oral reconstructive implants. From 1993 to 2003, Mr. Jones held successive sales and marketing positions at Biomet 3i, culminating in Director of International Operations. While there, he led Pacific Rim, Canadian, and Latin American operations as well as expansion into new markets outside of Western Europe and the US. He has a B.S. in Industrial Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Florida Atlantic University.
